Seán na Sagart's Tree

This is the informer's tree or Seán na Sagart's Tree. Seán was a "priest hunter" in the Penal Times. He was buried here in 1726. Years later a tree grew out of his grave and split it in halves, his life story is told in the guided tour of the Abbey. It is a marvellous story of a local man who was once sentenced to death for horse stealing, and who afterwards was acquitted on the promise of becoming a "priest hunter" is brought to life by Angela (one of Ireland's best story tellers) in her rich Mayo accent. This story alone as told by Angela makes a visit to the Abbey worthwhile.
